Product specification

The GMap Creator software makes it easy for people to create working Google Maps websites from thematic data stored in shapefiles.

Use of the software for any purpose other than academic research requires the standard commercial licence available from this website. For an academic research licence, please go directly to the CASA website.

Product description

Researchers, businesses and private individuals who collect geographically tagged data often have the need to create websites presenting their complex geospatial data in map form. However, it can be difficult to transform data stored in the most common geographic file format, shapefile, into code that can be uploaded onto a website.

GMap Creator solves this problem by converting point, polygon, and line data stored in shapefile format into an HTML page containing a Google Map. Users simply load a shapefile (and associated .prj file) into the application, select a single numeric value to colour according to a user-defined colour scheme, and push a button to create the output files. Publishing the map on a website is then just a matter of copying files onto a web server.

GMap Creator allows users with just a basic knowledge of HTML and Javascript to modify the format of the output HTML page. There is also a template to allow OpenStreetMap and OpenLayers to be used as alternate basemaps.

Thus, GMap Creator allows the quick and easy production of illuminating and persuasive geovisualisations that would otherwise be difficult or impossible for non-programmers to create.

Included in the bundle are:

  • the application executable file, and
  • help documentation, including a worked example (also available for download prior to licence purchase - see Product Files at bottom of this page)

GMap Creator was created at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) at University College London (UCL), CASA is a world leader in geospatial and crowdsourcing technology, with work that has recently featured in New Scientist, Wired andThe New York Times.
