Technology Patent Available for Non-Exclusive Licensing. 

The non-exclusive Licence you are buying via this website enables you to develop, manufacture and sell the compact configuration Acoust Optic Lens (AOL) for use in the life sciences according to the terms and conditions of the license agreement. The compact configuration AOL is any Acousto Optic Lens that makes use of the Compact Configuration drive equations to modify the RF drive frequency vs. time to compensate for the effective optical spacing of the Acousto Optic Deflectors (AODs). There are several other inventions covered by the Patent related to improving the performance of the AOL these are all described in the Patent section. 

The license covers the delivery of documentation describing the Silverlab AOL in detail including the requirement specifications of the Acousto Optic Crystals, CAD drawings of the mechanical design and details of all the components of the AOL. The Silver lab will provide 2 days of support to ensure the information provided is clear and satisfactory to the licensee, the cost of any extra support the Licensee needs from the UCL Silver Lab can be determined by contacting a.silver@ucl.ac.uk. Description of the technology

The patent describes a compact Acousto-Optic Lens (AOL) developed by the SilverLab in the Department of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology at UCL. It is capable of rapidly steering and focussing a laser beam. This technology has been developed for high speed 3D two-photon microscopy in the Life Sciences. When combined with an appropriate laser, optics and electronic control system this device can perform Random Access pointing or raster scanning a focussed laser beam in a 3D volume at 30-40kHz, which is substantially faster than other 3D 2-photon imaging technologies.

Product Specification

The SilverLab’s compact AOL design is capable of focusing a femtosecond laser beam to a stationary focal point and raster scanning it over a 3D volume with no mechanical movements. This technology has been developed for high speed 3D two-photon microscopy in the Life Sciences. This device can perform random access pointing at 36 kHz or raster scanning at up to 20 kHz/line over a 3D field of view (FOV). The ability to randomly access selected points, patches or sub-volumes within the 3D FOV with only a 24 microsecond gap between points or line scans, wherever they are located, is unique to AOL technology. This functionality is particularly useful for measuring brain activity, where signalling is rapid and spatially distributed in 3D making it difficult to monitor with conventional two-photon imaging methods, based on 2D resonant galvanometer mirrors and mechanical focusing. Moreover, data collection is more efficient with the AOL because the duty cycle is higher due to its ability to sample selectively from regions of interest rather than the whole of the 3D imaging volume, much of which is often not of interest. The AOLM is capable of high speed raster scanning in arbitrary planes with a full frame (512x512 voxel) temporal resolution of up to 39Hz using a fast electronic control and acquisition system (see FAQ).
